History

Haskell County was organized in 1887 and was originally named "Arapahoe" for a tribe of high plains Indians. After it was organized, it was renamed for Dudley C Haskell. The Santa Fe Trail crosses Haskell County from the northeast corner to the southwest side. This trail was from St. Louis, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The city of Satanta was named for a Kiowa Indian Chief, Satanta. The city of Sublette was named for a fur trapper, William Sublette.

Medical Resources

Haskell County has two doctors. Satanta has a 12-bed hospital and a connecting 35 bed nursing home. A new medical center capable of accommodating three doctors was completed in April 1978. Sublette has a medical clinic, but no hospital. Both cities have volunteer ambulance and fire departments.

Natural Resources

Haskell County has over 400 farms, over 1,000 irrigation wells, 300 oil wells, and 975 producing gas wells. It is situated over the Hugoton gas field, which supplies gas from Colorado to the Great lakes. There are 8 commercial cattle feedlots, averaging over 15,000 head each. The county's soil is ideal for farming. The principal crops grown are wheat, corn, feed grain, and alfalfa.

Civic Resources

The city of Sublette is the County Seat. It has a new one-level courthouse that was built in the spring of 1978 and remodeled in the winter of 1997.

The city of Satanta is one of the few cities in the United States that has a producing gas and oil well. This enabled the city to finance civic projects such as an airport and the city library.

Geography

Haskell County is the most level county in the State of Kansas. It is a perfect square covering an area of 24 miles by 24 miles, for a total of 576 square miles.
